Kotlin is a statically typed programming language. It runs on Java Virtual machine. It was introduced for Android mobile application development using Android Studio.
It was created by JetBrains, the creator of the popular IDE IntelliJ IDEA. A team of programmers in Russia developed it. IntelliJ IDEA has plugin to support Kotlin in it's community edition.
Kotlin is endorsed by Google for Android development, and announced first class support.
The example in the beginning of the chapter just demonstrates a sample hello world program. This tutorial intends to give a basic understanding of Kotlin language. A basic knowledge of Java is preferable but not mandatory.
