Answering Data Questions: Most, Least, and How Many More - First Grade Mathematics
Collecting data and making graphs is fun, but the real power of mathematics comes from interpreting the data! "Interpreting" means asking questions about the graph and finding answers that help you make decisions. Who won the class election? What snack should we buy for our party? Which book was read the most? By comparing the heights of bars and the lengths of rows, you can answer the three classic data questions: Which has the most? Which has the least? and How many more? In this chapter, you will become an expert data analyst.
The Big Three Data Questions
Whenever you look at a graph or table, you can analyze it using three core questions:
The Big Three Questions:
1. MOST: Which category has the GREATEST amount? (Tallest bar / longest row)
2. LEAST: Which category has the SMALLEST amount? (Shortest bar / shortest row)
3. HOW MANY MORE: What is the DIFFERENCE between two categories? (Subtract!)
Analyzing a Real Graph: Favorite Pets
Let us look at a bar graph of favorite pets and answer data questions step by step.

Dog Cat Fish Bird
Question 1: Which Pet Received the Most Votes?
Look for the tallest bar on the entire graph. The bar for Dog reaches up to 8! Dog received the MOST votes (8 votes).
Question 2: Which Pet Received the Least Votes?
Look for the shortest bar on the graph. The bar for Bird reaches up to 2. Bird received the LEAST votes (2 votes).
Question 3: How Many More Votes Did Dogs Get than Cats?
This is a comparison question! Step 1: Find the value for Dogs: 8. Step 2: Find the value for Cats: 6. Step 3: Subtract to find the difference: 8 - 6 = 2! Dogs received 2 MORE VOTES than Cats!
Question 4: How Many Students Voted in All?
To find the grand total, add the values of all four bars together: 8 (Dogs) + 6 (Cats) + 3 (Fish) + 2 (Birds). Use friendly grouping: 8 + 2 = 10, and 6 + 3 = 9. 10 + 9 = 19 students voted in all!
Practice Exercises
Exercise 1: In a class survey graph: 7 students chose Pizza, 5 chose Tacos, and 3 chose Burgers. Which food was the most popular, and which food was the least popular?
Exercise 2: Using the food survey from Exercise 1, how many more students chose Pizza than Burgers? Write the subtraction equation.
Exercise 3: How many students voted in total in the food survey from Exercise 1?
Exercise 4: Explain how you can find "how many fewer" votes one category has compared to another on a bar graph.
Solutions and Explanations
Solution to Exercise 1: Pizza was the most popular (most votes with 7), and Burgers was the least popular (least votes with 3).
Solution to Exercise 2: Pizza has 7 votes and Burgers has 3 votes. Equation: 7 - 3 = 4. Exactly 4 more students chose Pizza than Burgers.
Solution to Exercise 3: Add all the votes together: 7 + 5 + 3. Group 7 + 3 = 10, plus 5 = 15. A total of 15 students voted.
Solution to Exercise 4: To find "how many fewer," subtract the smaller category's value from the larger category's value. You can also look at the empty space between the tops of the two bars on the graph and count how many grid blocks shorter the smaller bar is.
