Day Sky vs. Night Sky - First Grade Science
Whenever you step outdoors and look up into the open sky, you witness a magnificent theater that changes completely every single day. During the daytime, the sky is bright blue, illuminated by the radiant light of the sun, and dotted with fluffy white clouds and soaring birds. At nighttime, the sky turns deep velvety black or dark indigo, revealing the glowing moon, twinkling distant stars, and silent planets. Understanding the differences between the day sky and the night sky, and discovering why this continuous cycle happens, reveals how our planet spins in the vastness of space.
The Day Sky vs. The Night Sky
The sky presents two completely different worlds depending on whether you look during the day or at night.

Why is the Day Sky Blue?
Have you ever wondered why the daytime sky is bright blue rather than green, purple, or black? Sunlight looks white, but it is actually a rainbow mixture of every color of light combined. When sunlight passes through Earth's atmosphere, tiny molecules of nitrogen and oxygen scatter the short, high-energy blue waves of light in every direction across the sky! This natural phenomenon is called Rayleigh scattering.
What Causes Day and Night?
Many people imagine that the sun travels across the sky, sinks below the mountains, and hides on the other side of the world at night. In reality, the sun does not move around the Earth at all! The cycle of day and night is caused entirely by Earth spinning on its axis.

Rotation: Spinning Like a Giant Top
Earth spins around an imaginary center line connecting the North Pole and the South Pole, called its axis. This spinning motion is called rotation. Earth completes one full spin (rotation) every 24 hours: exactly one full day! As Earth rotates from west to east: The half of the Earth facing toward the sun receives light and experiences daytime. The half of the Earth turned away from the sun is in darkness, experiencing nighttime. Because Earth never stops spinning, you are always rotating smoothly into daylight at sunrise and into shadow at sunset!
Apparent Motion of the Sun
Because we are riding on the spinning surface of the Earth, the sun seems to rise in the east each morning, travel high overhead at noon, and set in the west each evening.

This apparent motion of the sun across the sky is an optical illusion created by the continuous, steady eastward rotation of our planet.
Chapter Review Exercises
Question 1: What is the true scientific cause of the repeating cycle of day and night on Earth?
Question 2: How long does it take for planet Earth to complete one full rotation on its axis?
Question 3: Why does the sun appear to rise in the eastern sky every morning and set in the western sky every evening?
Question 4: Why does the daytime sky appear bright blue instead of black?
Solutions and Explanations
Solution 1: Day and night are caused by the continuous rotation (spinning) of planet Earth on its axis. As Earth turns, the side facing toward the sun experiences daytime, while the side turned away in shadow experiences nighttime.
Solution 2: It takes planet Earth 24 hours (one full day) to complete one full rotation on its axis.
Solution 3: The sun appears to rise in the east and set in the west because Earth rotates from west to east. As we ride on Earth's spinning surface toward the east, the sun first comes into view over the eastern horizon and slips out of view over the western horizon.
Solution 4: The daytime sky appears blue because when white sunlight passes through Earth's atmosphere, the microscopic air molecules scatter the short blue wavelengths of light in all directions across the sky much more than the other colors.
