Ninth Grade Mathematics: Surface Area & Volume of Right Circular Cones
A right circular cone is generated by revolving a right-angled triangle about one of its perpendicular legs. Featuring a circular base tapering smoothly to a single vertex, the cone introduces the distinction between vertical height and slant height, linking surface areas and volumes to fundamental circular and triangular principles.
The Geometry of a Right Circular Cone
A right circular cone is defined by three interconnected geometric dimensions meeting at a right-angled triangle:

Radius (r)
- Base Radius (r): The radius of the circular base.
- Vertical Height (h): The perpendicular distance from the apex V to the center O of the base.
- Slant Height (l): The straight-line distance along the outer surface from the apex V to any point on the base circumference.
By applying the Pythagorean theorem to right-angled triangle VOB:
The Fundamental Cone Relation:
l^2 = r^2 + h^2 ===> l = sqrt( r^2 + h^2 )
Knowing any two of these three dimensions immediately determines the third.
Derivation of the Curved Surface Area
To derive the curved surface area (CSA) of a cone, slice along the slant height and unroll the surface flat:
Unrolled Curved Surface = Sector of a Large Circle
- The radius of this large circle is the slant height l.
- The arc length of this sector is the base circumference 2*pi*r.

The area of a sector with radius l and arc length 2pir is given by:
Area = (1/2) * Arc Length * Radius = (1/2) * (2 * pi * r) * l = pi * r * l
Curved Surface Area (CSA):
CSA = pi * r * l
To find the Total Surface Area (TSA), add the area of the circular base (pi * r^2) to the curved surface area:
Total Surface Area (TSA):
TSA = pi * r * l + pi * r^2
TSA = pi * r * (l + r)
Volume of a Right Circular Cone
A foundational discovery in solid geometry—first established by Eudoxus and Archimedes—is that a cone contains exactly one-third the volume of a cylinder sharing the exact same base radius and height:
Volume of Cone = (1/3) * (Volume of Cylinder)
Volume = (1/3) * pi * r^2 * h
Cylinder vs Cone (Same r and h):

Three full cones of sand will fill a cylinder of the same radius and height to the brim.
Chapter Exercises
Exercise 1: Find the curved surface area, total surface area, and volume of a right circular cone whose base radius is 6 cm and vertical height is 8 cm (use 3.14 for pi).
Exercise 2: A conical circus tent has a base radius of 7 meters and a vertical height of 24 meters. Find the area of canvas required to manufacture the tent, and calculate the cost of canvas at 70 dollars per square meter (use 22/7 for pi).
Exercise 3: The volume of a right circular cone is 9,856 cubic cm, and the diameter of its base is 28 cm. Find the height of the cone, its slant height, and its curved surface area.
Solutions and Explanations
Solution 1: Given r = 6 cm and h = 8 cm. First compute slant height l using the Pythagorean theorem: l = sqrt(r^2 + h^2) = sqrt(6^2 + 8^2) = sqrt(36 + 64) = sqrt(100) = 10 cm. Curved Surface Area is CSA = pi * r * l = 3.14 * 6 * 10 = 188.4 square cm. Total Surface Area is TSA = pi * r * (l + r) = 3.14 * 6 * (10 + 6) = 18.84 * 16 = 301.44 square cm. Volume is V = (1/3) * pi * r^2 * h = (1/3) * 3.14 * (6^2) * 8 = (1/3) * 3.14 * 36 * 8 = 3.14 * 12 * 8 = 301.44 cubic cm.
Solution 2: For the conical tent, canvas is required only for the curved walls (the floor is bare ground), so we need the CSA. Given r = 7 m and h = 24 m. Compute slant height l: l = sqrt(r^2 + h^2) = sqrt(7^2 + 24^2) = sqrt(49 + 576) = sqrt(625) = 25 meters. Curved Surface Area is CSA = pi * r * l = (22/7) * 7 * 25 = 22 * 25 = 550 square meters. The cost of canvas at 70 dollars per square meter is Cost = 550 * 70 = 38,500 dollars.
Solution 3: Diameter = 28 cm, so radius r = 28 / 2 = 14 cm. Volume V = 9,856 cm^3. Using the volume formula: (1/3) * pi * r^2 * h = 9,856. Substitute r = 14 and pi = 22/7: (1/3) * (22/7) * 14 * 14 * h = 9,856. Simplify: (1/3) * 22 * 2 * 14 * h = 9,856, so (616 / 3) * h = 9,856. Multiply by 3/616: h = (9,856 * 3) / 616 = 16 * 3 = 48 cm. Vertical height is h = 48 cm. Slant height is l = sqrt(r^2 + h^2) = sqrt(14^2 + 48^2) = sqrt(196 + 2304) = sqrt(2500) = 50 cm. Curved Surface Area is CSA = pi * r * l = (22/7) * 14 * 50 = 22 * 2 * 50 = 2,200 square cm.
