The Seven Continents and Five Oceans: Second Grade Social Studies
Earth's surface is covered by seven vast landmasses called continents and five massive bodies of saltwater called oceans.
Our Blue Planet
When astronauts look at Earth from outer space, our planet looks like a brilliant blue marble swirled with white clouds and patches of green, brown, and tan. About seventy-one percent of the Earth's surface is covered by water, while the remaining twenty-nine percent consists of dry land.
+-------------------------------------------------------------+
| EARTH'S SURFACE RATIO |

| [ LAND: ~29% ] ==========> 7 Continents |

The Seven Continents
A continent is one of the seven largest continuous expanses of land on Earth. Each continent has unique climates, plant and animal life, countries, and human cultures.
+-------------------------------------------------------------+
| THE SEVEN CONTINENTS |
+-------------------+--------------------+--------------------+
| 1. ASIA | Largest continent; home to more than |
| | half of the world's human population |
| 2. AFRICA | Second largest; features Sahara Desert, |
| | Nile River, and vast savannas |
| 3. NORTH AMERICA | Our continent; includes Canada, USA, |
| | Mexico, Central America, & Caribbean |
| 4. SOUTH AMERICA | Home to Amazon Rainforest, Andes |
| | Mountains, and Amazon River |
| 5. ANTARCTICA | Coldest, windiest, driest continent; |
| | covered in deep ice sheets and glaciers |
| 6. EUROPE | Many historic countries; attached to |
| | Asia, forming the Eurasian landmass |
| 7. AUSTRALIA | Smallest continent; an island continent |
| | known for kangaroos and the Outback |
+-------------------+--------------------+--------------------+
Asia: The Largest Continent
Asia is the largest continent in both physical size and population. It contains the world's highest mountain range, the Himalayas, including Mount Everest. Countries like China, India, and Japan are located in Asia, representing ancient civilizations and bustling modern cities.
Africa: Continent of Natural Wonders
Africa is the second-largest continent. It is home to the world's longest river, the Nile, and the largest hot desert, the Sahara. Across the central plains and savannas roam majestic animals like elephants, lions, zebras, and giraffes. Africa is composed of fifty-four independent nations.
North America: Our Home Continent
North America is the continent where we live. It includes Canada to the north, the United States in the center, and Mexico, Central American countries, and the Caribbean islands to the south. North America contains great plains, deciduous and pine forests, rocky mountains, and the Great Lakes.
South America: Land of Rainforests
Located south of North America, South America is home to the Amazon Basin, the world's largest tropical rainforest. The mighty Amazon River carries more water than any other river on Earth. The long Andes Mountains stretch along its western coast.
Antarctica: The Frozen Continent
Antarctica is located at the southernmost tip of Earth surrounding the South Pole. It is almost entirely covered by a thick ice sheet miles deep. It is the coldest, windiest, and driest continent on Earth. No people live there permanently, but international scientists live at research stations to study ice, climate, and penguins.
Europe: Continent of History and Culture
Europe is located west of Asia and north of Africa. It has dozens of diverse nations, such as the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain. Europe is famous for ancient castles, rich artistic traditions, and beautiful historic cities.
Australia: The Island Continent
Australia is the smallest continent and is also a single country. Because it is surrounded completely by water, it is sometimes called an island continent. Australia is famous for unique marsupials like kangaroos, koalas, and platypuses, as well as the Great Barrier Reef off its northeastern coast.
The Five Oceans
An ocean is a vast body of saltwater that separates continents. Although geographers give them five different names, all oceans are connected into one continuous global ocean system.
+-------------------+-----------------------------------------+
| OCEAN | KEY CHARACTERISTICS |
+-------------------+-----------------------------------------+
| Pacific Ocean | Largest and deepest; covers 1/3 of Earth|
| Atlantic Ocean | Second largest; separates Americas from |
| | Europe and Africa |
| Indian Ocean | Warmest ocean; touches Africa, Asia, |
| | and Australia |
| Southern Ocean | Encircles Antarctica at the South Pole |
| Arctic Ocean | Smallest and shallowest; around North |
| | Pole; partially covered in sea ice |
+-------------------+-----------------------------------------+
Pacific Ocean: The Giant
The Pacific Ocean is the largest and deepest ocean on Earth. It is so vast that all seven continents could fit inside it with room to spare! The Pacific Ocean is ringed by active volcanoes and earthquake zones known as the Ring of Fire.
Atlantic Ocean: The Historic Sea Highway
The Atlantic Ocean lies between the Americas to the west and Europe and Africa to the east. For hundreds of years, explorers, trade ships, and passenger liners crossed the Atlantic Ocean to travel between the Old World and the New World.
Indian Ocean: The Warm Trade Waters
The Indian Ocean is located south of Asia, between Africa and Australia. It is known for warm tropical waters and important international shipping routes carrying goods between Asia, the Middle East, and the rest of the world.
Southern Ocean: The Icy Ring
The Southern Ocean completely encircles the continent of Antarctica. It is known for freezing water temperatures, powerful circumpolar currents, and floating icebergs where seals and whales feed.
Arctic Ocean: The Frozen Northern Sea
The Arctic Ocean is the smallest, shallowest, and coldest ocean, surrounding the North Pole. Much of its surface remains covered by floating polar sea ice throughout the year, providing a home for polar bears, walruses, and narwhals.
Exercises and Review
Exercise 1: Name all seven continents in order from largest to smallest and identify which continent is your home.
Exercise 1 Solution: The seven continents in order from largest to smallest are Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe, and Australia. Our home continent is North America, which includes Canada, the United States, Mexico, and Central America.
Exercise 2: Describe the Pacific Ocean and the Arctic Ocean, highlighting two differences between them.
Exercise 2 Solution: The Pacific Ocean is the largest and deepest ocean on Earth, covering more than one-third of the globe with warm to temperate waters and thousands of tropical islands. In contrast, the Arctic Ocean is the smallest, shallowest, and coldest ocean, situated around the North Pole and covered by thick polar sea ice where animals like polar bears live.
