National Holidays: Thanksgiving, Independence Day, and Memorial Day: Second Grade Social Studies
National holidays are official days of celebration and commemoration established by our country to honor significant historic events, remember heroic sacrifices, and unite all citizens in gratitude and reflection.
Why We Celebrate National Holidays
Throughout the year, our calendars feature special federal holidays. On these days, schools, banks, post offices, and government offices close so families and communities can pause their daily work. National holidays are not just days off; they are living reminders of the struggles, values, and triumphs that shaped the United States of America.

Thanksgiving Day: Harvest and Gratitude
Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of every November. It is an American holiday focused on gratitude, family reunions, and sharing food with neighbors.
The Historical Roots of Thanksgiving
In the autumn of 1621, English Pilgrims who had settled at Plymouth, Massachusetts, shared a three-day harvest feast with the Wampanoag people, led by Massasoit. The Wampanoag had helped the Pilgrims survive their harsh first year by teaching them how to plant native corn, tap maple trees, and catch eels. The gathering celebrated a successful harvest and peaceful cooperation between cultures.

Modern Thanksgiving Traditions
In 1863, during the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln declared Thanksgiving an official annual national holiday, urging all Americans to heal wounds and express gratitude. Today, families gather to roast turkey, bake pumpkin pies, watch parades, and share the things they are most grateful for in their lives.
Independence Day: The Fourth of July
Independence Day, celebrated every July 4th, is the official birthday of the United States of America.
The Declaration of Independence
On July 4, 1776, leaders of the thirteen American colonies meeting in Philadelphia approved the Declaration of Independence, written primarily by Thomas Jefferson. The document boldly proclaimed that all people are created equal and endowed with unalienable rights, including "Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness." The colonies announced they were breaking away from Great Britain to form a free, independent nation.

How Americans Celebrate July Fourth
Independence Day is celebrated with festive outdoor gatherings: neighborhood parades with marching bands and fire trucks, backyard barbecues with watermelon and hot dogs, reading the Declaration aloud, and spectacular nighttime fireworks displays that light up the summer sky.
Memorial Day and Veterans Day: Honoring Service
Two major national holidays honor the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces: Memorial Day and Veterans Day.

Memorial Day: Remembering the Fallen
Observed on the last Monday of May, Memorial Day is a solemn holiday dedicated to remembering and honoring military personnel who gave their lives in wartime to protect our nation's freedom. Communities hold quiet memorial ceremonies, play the mournful bugle call "Taps," and place small American flags on soldiers' graves in national cemeteries.
Veterans Day: Thanking Those Who Served
Celebrated every November 11th, Veterans Day honors all living men and women who have served honorably in the United States military (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, and Space Force). Towns hold festive parades and banquets, and citizens thank veterans personally for their dedication and sacrifice.
Exercises and Review
Exercise 1: Describe the historical reason for celebrating Independence Day on the Fourth of July and list two ways Americans celebrate this holiday.
Exercise 1 Solution: Independence Day is celebrated on the Fourth of July because on July 4, 1776, American colonial leaders officially approved the Declaration of Independence, announcing that the thirteen colonies were free and independent from Great Britain and forming the United States of America. Two ways Americans celebrate are by attending community parades with marching bands and watching evening fireworks displays with family and friends.
Exercise 2: Explain the important difference between Memorial Day and Veterans Day.
Exercise 2 Solution: The important difference is that Memorial Day, observed in late May, is a solemn day specifically honoring military service members who died in battle or during military service protecting our country. In contrast, Veterans Day, celebrated on November 11th, honors all men and women who have served honorably in the armed forces, both living and deceased, celebrating their service and thanking them for protecting our nation.
