Measuring Lengths to Halves and Fourths of an Inch - Third Grade Mathematics
In real life, objects rarely line up with exact whole inches on a ruler. A pencil might be longer than 5 inches but not quite 6 inches, or a beetle might measure somewhere between 1 and 2 inches. In third grade, you will learn how to read a ruler with fractions of an inch—specifically halves and fourths (quarters) of an inch—giving you the tools to measure lengths with craftsmanship and accuracy.
Anatomy of an Inch on a Customary Ruler
Look closely at the distance between the whole numbers 0 and 1 on a standard inch ruler. That single inch is partitioned into smaller fractional intervals.
0 1 Inch
|---------------+---------------+---------------+---------------|
0 1/4 2/4 3/4 1
(1/2)
Look at the height of the lines (tick marks):
- The longest tick marks are the whole inch marks (0, 1, 2, 3...).
- The second longest tick mark in the exact center is the half-inch mark (1/2).
- The medium tick marks between the half-inch and whole-inch marks are the fourth-inch marks (1/4 and 3/4).
Notice that the half-inch mark is also 2/4 of an inch, because 2/4 is equivalent to 1/2!
The Four Fourth-Inch Steps
Every whole inch is made of four equal quarters (fourths):
- 1/4 inch: 1 quarter of the way across
- 2/4 inch (1/2 inch): 2 quarters of the way across (halfway)
- 3/4 inch: 3 quarters of the way across
- 4/4 inch (1 whole inch): all the way across
How to Measure an Object Accurately
To measure any object using a ruler:
1. Align the starting edge: Place the left edge of your object squarely against the 0 mark on the ruler (NOT the physical plastic end of the ruler, unless 0 is at the very edge!).
2. Identify the last whole inch: Look at the last whole inch the object passes. Write this number down.
3. Count fractional increments: Look at where the right edge lands between whole inches:
- Does it land right on the half mark? (Write 1/2).
- Does it land on the first fourth mark? (Write 1/4).
- Does it land on the third fourth mark? (Write 3/4).
4. Combine the whole number and fraction to write a mixed number: for example, 3 and 1/2 inches, or 5 and 3/4 inches!

Nail ends at the 3/4 mark past 1 inch!
Length of nail = 1 and 3/4 inches (1 3/4 in).
Measuring to the Nearest Half or Fourth Inch
Sometimes an object falls between ruler marks. In third grade, we round to the nearest fraction mark:
- If an edge is closest to 2 and 1/4 inches, we record its length as 2 and 1/4 inches.
- If it is past 2 and 1/4 and closer to 2 and 1/2 inches, we record it as 2 and 1/2 inches.
Chapter Practice Exercises
- State the fraction of an inch (1/4, 1/2, or 3/4) indicated by: a. The mark exactly halfway between 0 and 1 b. The first tick mark past a whole inch c. The third tick mark past a whole inch
- Write the mixed number length shown: a. 2 whole inches plus the halfway mark b. 4 whole inches plus the third quarter mark c. 6 whole inches plus the first quarter mark
- A caterpillar crawls along a ruler. Its head starts at 0 and its tail ends at the mark halfway between 3 and 4 inches. How long is the caterpillar?
- A ribbon is 5 and 3/4 inches long. A piece measuring 2 and 1/4 inches is cut off. How long is the remaining ribbon? (Hint: subtract whole numbers, then subtract fractions!).
- Name an everyday classroom object that you estimate is about 2 and 1/2 inches long.
Solutions and Step-by-Step Answers
- Fractions of an inch: a. Halfway mark = 1/2 inch (or 2/4). b. First tick mark past whole = 1/4 inch. c. Third tick mark past whole = 3/4 inch.
- Mixed numbers: a. 2 and 1/2 inches (2 1/2 in). b. 4 and 3/4 inches (4 3/4 in). c. 6 and 1/4 inches (6 1/4 in).
- The caterpillar is 3 and 1/2 inches long.
- Ribbon length: Whole numbers: 5 - 2 = 3. Fractions: 3/4 - 1/4 = 2/4 (which equals 1/2). The remaining ribbon is 3 and 1/2 inches (or 3 2/4 inches) long.
- Everyday object: A standard pink pencil eraser or a paperclip box is about 2 and 1/2 inches long.
