Subtracting Across Zeros - Third Grade Mathematics
Subtracting across zeros is one of the most intriguing challenges in third grade mathematics. When the top number contains zeros in the tens or hundreds place, you cannot borrow immediately from your neighbor because there is nothing there to take! In this chapter, you will learn how to travel across multiple place value columns to unbundle hundreds and thousands, making subtraction across zeros straightforward and foolproof.
Why Are Zeros Tricky in Subtraction?
Consider trying to solve 500 - 236: You begin in the ones column: you have 0 ones, and you need to subtract 6. You look next door to the tens column for help: there are 0 tens! Because the tens column is completely empty, it has nothing to lend you right now.
Hundreds Tens Ones
5 0 0
- 2 3 6
---------------------------
(No ones!) (No tens!)
What should you do? You do not stop—you continue traveling left until you reach a column that actually has value: the hundreds column!
The Chain of Regrouping
To get units into the ones place, you must unbundle step by step through each column. You cannot jump straight from hundreds to ones; you must visit the tens column first!
Step 1: Unbundle 1 Hundred into 10 Tens
5 Hundreds becomes 4 Hundreds.
0 Tens becomes 10 Tens.
Step 2: Unbundle 1 Ten into 10 Ones
10 Tens becomes 9 Tens.
0 Ones becomes 10 Ones.
Look at how the top number transforms:
4 9 10
5 0 0
- 2 3 6
-----------
2 6 4
Now every column has plenty of value:
- Ones: 10 - 6 = 4
- Tens: 9 - 3 = 6
- Hundreds: 4 - 2 = 2
The answer is 264.
Notice that the middle zero always became a 9! This is because it received 10 tens from the hundreds, and then immediately gave 1 ten away to the ones place, leaving exactly 9 tens behind.
Subtracting from 1,000
When you subtract from 1,000, you have three zeros in a row!
Let us subtract 1,000 - 467:
Thousands Hundreds Tens Ones
1 0 0 0
- 4 6 7
---------------------------------
Watch the cascade of regrouping:
1. Go all the way to the thousands place. Cross out 1 thousand; it becomes 0 thousands.
2. The hundreds place gets 10 hundreds.
3. Unbundle 1 hundred: 10 hundreds becomes 9 hundreds, and gives 10 tens to the tens place.
4. Unbundle 1 ten: 10 tens becomes 9 tens, and gives 10 ones to the ones place.
0 9 9 10
1 0 0 0
- 4 6 7
---------------
5 3 3
Now subtract down:
- Ones: 10 - 7 = 3
- Tens: 9 - 6 = 3
- Hundreds: 9 - 4 = 5
- Thousands: 0 - 0 = 0
The difference is 533.
The Brilliant "Subtract 1" Mental Math Strategy
Here is a wonderful mathematical secret that lets you avoid all regrouping across zeros!
If you subtract 1 from the top number, you must also subtract 1 from the bottom number. The difference between two numbers does not change if you shift both numbers down by 1!
Let us test 500 - 236 using this strategy:
- Subtract 1 from 500: 500 - 1 = 499.
- Subtract 1 from 236: 236 - 1 = 235.
Now look at the new problem:
4 9 9
- 2 3 5
-------
2 6 4
Look at that: 9 - 5 = 4, 9 - 3 = 6, 4 - 2 = 2. You get 264 without doing a single regrouping step! Because 499 has only 9s, no column ever requires borrowing.

Solutions and Step-by-Step Answers
- Standard regrouping across zeros: a. 400 - 165: 400 becomes 3 hundreds, 9 tens, 10 ones. 10 - 5 = 5; 9 - 6 = 3; 3 - 1 = 2. Difference = 235. b. 700 - 348: 700 becomes 6 hundreds, 9 tens, 10 ones. 10 - 8 = 2; 9 - 4 = 5; 6 - 3 = 3. Difference = 352. c. 600 - 281: 600 becomes 5 hundreds, 9 tens, 10 ones. 10 - 1 = 9; 9 - 8 = 1; 5 - 2 = 3. Difference = 319. d. 900 - 527: 900 becomes 8 hundreds, 9 tens, 10 ones. 10 - 7 = 3; 9 - 2 = 7; 8 - 5 = 3. Difference = 373.
- Mixed zeros: a. 504 - 238: 504 becomes 4 hundreds, 9 tens, 14 ones. 14 - 8 = 6; 9 - 3 = 6; 4 - 2 = 2. Difference = 266. b. 802 - 475: 802 becomes 7 hundreds, 9 tens, 12 ones. 12 - 5 = 7; 9 - 7 = 2; 7 - 4 = 3. Difference = 327. c. 306 - 159: 306 becomes 2 hundreds, 9 tens, 16 ones. 16 - 9 = 7; 9 - 5 = 4; 2 - 1 = 1. Difference = 147. d. 1,000 - 384: 1,000 becomes 0 thousands, 9 hundreds, 9 tens, 10 ones. 10 - 4 = 6; 9 - 8 = 1; 9 - 3 = 6. Difference = 616.
- Using the "Subtract 1" strategy on 800 - 453: 800 - 1 = 799. 453 - 1 = 452. Calculate 799 - 452: 9 - 2 = 7 9 - 5 = 4 7 - 4 = 3 Difference = 347.
- Water tank: 500 - 374. Regroup 500 into 4 hundreds, 9 tens, 10 ones. 10 - 4 = 6 9 - 7 = 2 4 - 3 = 1 There are 126 gallons left.
- Check: 126 + 374. Ones: 6 + 4 = 10 (write 0, regroup 1). Tens: 1 + 2 + 7 = 10 (write 0, regroup 1). Hundreds: 1 + 1 + 3 = 5. Sum = 500. The check confirms our answer is correct!
