Community Helpers: Firefighters, Police, and Medics: First Grade Social
Community helpers are brave, skilled public servants who protect our safety, rescue people during emergencies, and keep our towns peaceful and healthy.
Who Are Emergency Community Helpers?
In every town and city, emergencies can happen unexpectedly. A fire might break out in a kitchen, a driver might have an accident on a slippery road, or a neighbor might experience a sudden medical emergency. When these dangerous situations occur, specialized community helpers jump into action immediately.

The Universal Emergency Number: 9-1-1
In the United States, all emergency helpers are connected through one universal telephone number: 9-1-1.
Calling 9-1-1 connects you to a trained dispatcher. You should only call 9-1-1 in a true emergency, such as a fire, an intruder, or someone who is unconscious or badly injured. You should never call 9-1-1 as a joke or for simple questions, because that keeps dispatchers from answering real life-or-death calls.
WHEN TO CALL 9-1-1 SAFELY
[ TRUE EMERGENCY ] [ NOT AN EMERGENCY ]
A house or stove is on fire Lost homework paper
Someone cannot breathe or wake up Scraped knee needing a band-aid
A serious car crash occurred Wanting to ask a question
Firefighters: Protectors Against Flames and Hazard
Firefighters work out of neighborhood firehouses, ready to respond at any second of the day or night.
Firehouse Life and Speedy Response
When the alarm bell rings inside a firehouse, firefighters move with remarkable speed. They slide down brass poles or race down stairs, pull on heavy flame-resistant turnout coats and pants, step into steel-toe rubber boots, and board giant red fire engines.
Essential Firefighting Equipment
Fire engines carry long ladders that can extend high into the air to reach apartment windows. They carry hundreds of feet of heavy hose that connect to yellow fire hydrants on city sidewalks.
Firefighters wear oxygen masks and air tanks so they can breathe safely inside smoky buildings. They also use thermal imaging cameras that let them see through black smoke to locate trapped people and pets.

Police Officers: Guardians of Safety and Law
Police officers are sworn public servants dedicated to maintaining order, preventing crime, and helping citizens in trouble.
Patrols and Community Support
Police officers patrol neighborhoods in marked squad cars, on bicycles, on horses, or on foot. Their presence discourages dangerous behavior and makes streets safer for families.
Police officers help direct traffic when stoplights lose power during storms. They investigate accidents, help lost children find their parents, and enforce speed limits so cars do not speed past school crosswalks.
Tools of the Police Officer
Police officers wear crisp uniforms with a shiny badge that displays their authority. They carry two-way radios on their shoulders to talk with dispatchers, flashlights for nighttime searches, and first-aid kits in the trunks of their patrol vehicles.

[ Traffic Safety ] ---> Directs cars at broken signals & crosswalks
[ Community Aid ] ---> Reconnects lost children with families
Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) and Paramedics
When someone is gravely sick or injured, Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) and Paramedics arrive in a specialized vehicle called an ambulance.
The Mobile Hospital: Inside the Ambulance
An ambulance is like a miniature emergency hospital room on wheels. It is equipped with flashing red and white lights and loud sirens that tell other cars on the road to pull over to the right and stop.
Inside the ambulance, paramedics have heart monitors, oxygen masks, stretchers, bandages, splints for broken bones, and life-saving medications. Paramedics begin treating patients immediately at the scene and continue medical care while driving smoothly toward the hospital emergency room.

How You Can Help Community Helpers
Community helpers work hard for us, and young citizens can assist them by practicing good safety habits.
Memorize your home address and telephone number so you can tell emergency workers if you ever get lost. Never play with matches, lighters, or stove knobs. When you hear an emergency siren while riding in a car, remind others to stay calm while the driver safely pulls over to let the emergency vehicle pass.
Exercises and Review
Exercise 1: What is the emergency telephone number used in the United States, and when is it appropriate to call this number?
Exercise 1 Solution: The emergency telephone number is 9-1-1. It is appropriate to call 9-1-1 only during true emergencies where someone's life, safety, or health is in immediate danger, such as a fire, a severe car crash, or a person who cannot breathe or wake up.
Exercise 2: Describe two important tools or pieces of equipment that firefighters use to rescue people and extinguish fires.
Exercise 2 Solution: Firefighters use heavy water hoses connected to fire hydrants to spray powerful streams of water on flames, and they wear oxygen tanks and masks that supply clean air so they can breathe safely inside smoky burning buildings.
