The Pledge of Allegiance and Patriotic Songs: First Grade Social

Patriotic pledges and songs are musical and spoken traditions that unite American citizens in shared loyalty, respect, and celebration of our country's founding ideals.

What Is a Pledge?

A pledge is a solemn and serious promise. When you make a pledge, you are giving your word of honor that you will remain faithful and true to a person, an ideal, or a community. The Pledge of Allegiance is a promise of loyalty to the United States of America and to the democratic values our nation protects.

How We Recite the Pledge with Respect

When citizens recite the Pledge of Allegiance, they demonstrate respect through physical posture.

Stand straight on your two feet, face toward the American flag, remove any hat or cap from your head, and place your right hand flat over your heart. Reciting the words clearly in a calm, reverent voice shows pride in being part of our American community.

               RESPECTFUL PLEDGE POSTURE

[ Feet Flat on Ground ] ---> Stand tall and still
[ Remove Caps/Hats ] ---> Uncover head out of honor
[ Right Hand on Heart ] ---> Placed over the left side of chest
[ Eyes on the Flag ] ---> Look directly at the Stars and Stripes

Understanding Every Word of the Pledge

The words of the Pledge were written in 1892 by Francis Bellamy. Because some of the vocabulary is mature, breaking down each phrase helps you understand the deep promise you are making.

Our National Anthem: The Star-Spangled Banner

A national anthem is the official patriotic song of a country, sung at national ceremonies, civic holidays, and before major sporting events.

Written During the Rocket's Red Glare

Our national anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner," was written during the War of 1812 by a young American lawyer named Francis Scott Key.

Key was on a ship in Baltimore Harbor watching British warships bombard an American fortress called Fort McHenry all night long. Key worried that the fort would surrender. But when the morning sun rose through the smoke, Key saw our huge American flag still flying proudly above the fort! Overjoyed, he wrote the famous poem that became our national anthem.

Other Cherished Patriotic Songs

Across American history, musicians have composed songs celebrating the natural beauty and unity of our land.

"America the Beautiful"

Written by Katharine Lee Bates after standing atop Pikes Peak in the Rocky Mountains, "America the Beautiful" describes the vast landscapes of our country.

The song celebrates "spacious skies," "amber waves of grain" across Midwestern plains, and "purple mountain majesties." It reminds Americans that our continent is blessed with magnificent natural wonders.
