Community Leaders: Mayors, Governors, and Presidents: First Grade Social
Leaders are individuals chosen by citizens to guide our communities, make important decisions, enforce laws, and work tirelessly to ensure the well-being of all people.
What Is a Leader?
A leader is someone who guides, directs, and helps a group accomplish important goals. Great leaders are good listeners who care about the people they serve. They do not boss people around for their own benefit; instead, they work as public servants, dedicating their time to solving problems and making life better for everyone.

Local Government: The City Mayor
Every town or city has a local government that takes care of immediate community needs.
Duties of a Mayor
The mayor is the elected leader of a city or town. The mayor works in a building called City Hall alongside the city council, a group of citizens also elected to help make town decisions.
The mayor helps manage public services, including the police department, fire stations, public parks, trash collection, and libraries. If a neighborhood needs a new playground or if roads need to be repaved after winter storms, the mayor and city council work to solve those problems.

Duties of a Governor
The governor is the top elected leader of an entire state. The governor works in the state capital building.
The governor oversees state highways, state parks, state colleges, and state police. When severe storms or natural disasters strike a state, the governor coordinates emergency assistance, sending supplies, rescue teams, and medical workers to towns that need help.

How Citizens Help Leaders
Leaders cannot do all the work alone. They rely on active, engaged citizens to tell them what the community needs.
Writing Letters and Attending Meetings
Citizens can attend city council meetings to speak about issues in their neighborhoods. Children and adults can write letters or draw pictures to send to their mayor, governor, or president, explaining what they hope the leaders will protect or improve.
