Second Grade English: Editing Checklist: CUPS (Capitalization, Usage, Punctuation, Spelling)
When an author finishes drafting and revising a story, their ideas are exciting, vibrant, and well-organized. But before that piece of writing can be published and shared with the public, it must pass through the final, crucial quality inspection. That inspection is called editing or proofreading. Even the most brilliant story in the world can be ruined if it is riddled with misspelled words, missing periods, or forgotten capital letters. To help you inspect every line of your writing like a professional editor, you can rely on the famous four-step editing checklist: C.U.P.S. In this chapter, you will master the CUPS proofreading system and learn how to use editing marks to clean up your drafts.
The C.U.P.S. Editing Framework
The acronym C.U.P.S. stands for the four vital mechanics checkpoints of editing: Capitalization, Usage, Punctuation, and Spelling.
+-----------------------------------------------------------------+
THE C.U.P.S. EDITING SHIELD
+-----------------------------------------------------------------+

[ C ] - CAPITALIZATION:
Did I capitalize the first word of every sentence?
Did I capitalize proper names, dates, and "I"?

[ U ] - USAGE (Grammar):
Do my subjects and verbs agree?
Did I choose the right pronouns (I vs. me)?

[ P ] - PUNCTUATION:
Does every sentence have a period, ?, or !?
Did I include commas in dates, lists, and letters?

[ S ] - SPELLING:
Did I check my sight words and word wall?
Did I use my phonics rules (magic E, vowel teams)?

+-----------------------------------------------------------------+
Professional Proofreading Marks
Editors use special visual symbols to mark corrections directly onto a paper draft.
+-----------------------------------------------------------------+
ESSENTIAL PROOFREADING SYMBOLS
+-----------------------------------------------------------------+
Three Underlines (===): Capitalize this lowercase letter!
Slash (/): Make this capital letter lowercase!
Circled Dot ( (.) ): Insert a missing period here!
Caret ( ^ ): Insert a missing word or letter here!
Caret with comma (,): Insert a missing comma here!
Squiggly line: Check the spelling of this word!
+-----------------------------------------------------------------+
The "Four-Pass" Editing Method
Never try to check all four CUPS categories at the exact same time; your eyes will miss things! Instead, make four separate, fast passes across your paper: Pass 1: Read looking ONLY for Capital letters. Pass 2: Read looking ONLY for Grammar and Word Usage. Pass 3: Read looking ONLY for Punctuation marks at the ends of sentences. Pass 4: Read backwards, word by word, from bottom to top, looking ONLY for Spelling! (Reading backwards tricks your brain into seeing the spelling of each word without getting swept away by the story!).
The CUPS Clinic: Fixing a Broken Passage
Observe how CUPS repairs a draft in action. Rough Draft: "last friday leo and me went to the zoo we saw three elefant." Pass C (Capitalization): Fix last to Last, friday to Friday, leo to Leo. Pass U (Usage): Fix me to I ("Leo and I went"). Pass P (Punctuation): Add a period after zoo to separate the two run-on thoughts! Add a period at the end. Pass S (Spelling): Fix elefant to elephants (spelled with ph and plural s). Clean Edited Version: "Last Friday, Leo and I went to the zoo. We saw three elephants."
Practice Exercises
Exercise 1: Use the CUPS checklist to find and list all four errors in this sentence: "on tuesday maya and her sister walks to the lybrary"
Exercise 2: Edit this short paragraph and rewrite it correctly: "yesterday me and carlos played outside in the garden we planted three flowrs"
Exercise Solutions
Solution to Exercise 1: The four errors are: 1. Capitalization: on must be capitalized to On. 2. Capitalization: tuesday must be capitalized to Tuesday. 3. Usage: walks must be walk to agree with plural subject Maya and her sister. 4. Spelling: lybrary is misspelled and should be library. 5. Punctuation: A period must be added to the end.
Solution to Exercise 2: The corrected, edited paragraph reads: "Yesterday, Carlos and I played outside in the garden. We planted three flowers." (Fixed capitalization of Yesterday, corrected me and Carlos to Carlos and I, added a period to fix the run-on, capitalized We, corrected flowrs to flowers, and added an end period).
