Second Grade English: Letter Writing: The Five Parts of a Friendly Letter & Postcards
In an era of instant phone messages and digital screens, receiving a real, handwritten letter in your mailbox is one of the most delightful surprises in the world! A friendly letter is a personal, caring message written to someone you know well a grandparent, a cousin, a pen pal, or a friend who has moved away. Because letters travel through the postal system and are kept as cherished keepsakes, they follow a special, timeless five-part architectural tradition. In this chapter, you will master the five parts of a friendly letter, learn how to address an envelope, and discover how to write a travel postcard.
The Five Parts of a Friendly Letter
Every complete friendly letter in the world is organized into five traditional parts.

Part 1: The Heading (The Date)
The heading sits in the upper right-hand corner of your stationery. It tells the recipient exactly when the letter was written, which becomes wonderful when they re-read your letter years in the future! Format: October 12, 2026 (Remember the comma between day and year!).
Part 2: The Greeting (The Salutation)
The greeting sits along the left margin and says a polite hello. It begins with a capital letter and ends with a comma: Dear Carlos, Dear Aunt Maya, Dearest Mom,
Part 3: The Body (The Heart of the Letter)
The body contains your thoughts, stories, and questions. Remember to indent your paragraphs! Friendly Letter Etiquette: A great friendly letter does not just talk about yourself; it also asks thoughtful questions about the other person's life: "How is your garden growing? Did you finish your new painting?"
Part 4: The Closing (The Farewell)
The closing sits on the right-hand side, below the body. It says a warm goodbye. Capitalize only the first word and end with a comma: Sincerely, Your friend, Warmly, With love,
Part 5: The Signature (Your Name)
Directly beneath the closing, write your name in neat handwriting. You do not need punctuation after your signature.
Addressing an Envelope
To make sure your letter reaches its destination, the envelope must be addressed correctly with three pieces of information:
1. Return Address (Top Left): Your own name and home address.
2. Mailing Address (Center): The recipient's name, street address, city, state, and ZIP code.
3. Postage Stamp (Top Right): The stamp pays the postal carrier to deliver your letter!
