Comparing Fractions, Decimals & Percents - Sixth Grade Mathematics

Comparing numbers across mixed representations requires converting all values into a single common format, using decimals or percents as universal benchmarks.

The Universal Comparison Strategy

When comparing an assortment of numbers presented in different forms (such as 3/5, 0.62, and 58%), direct visual inspection is unreliable. The standard strategy is to convert every quantity into an identical format.

Step-by-Step Multi-Form Comparison

Convert all quantities to decimals with equal decimal places by annexing zeros.

Compare and Order: { 3/4, 0.72, 78%, 7/10 }

Step 1: Convert all to decimals:
        3/4   --> 3 / 4 = 0.750
        0.72  --> 0.720
        78%   --> 78 / 100 = 0.780
        7/10  --> 7 / 10 = 0.700

Step 2: Compare place-by-place (thousandths):
        0.700 < 0.720 < 0.750 < 0.780

Step 3: Write in ascending order using ORIGINAL forms:
        7/10 < 0.72 < 3/4 < 78%

The Benchmark Comparison Shortcut

Before executing long conversions, evaluate values relative to half (0.5, 50%, 1/2) and one whole (1.0, 100%, 1): Values less than 1/2: 38% (0.38) and 2/5 (0.40) are below 50%. Values greater than 1/2: 0.65 and 3/4 (75%) are above 50%. This mental partitioning immediately divides your dataset into two smaller, easily manageable subsets.

Real-World Comparative Datasets

Science and consumer reports frequently blend representations: Battery Level A: 3/5 charged (60%). Battery Level B: 0.58 charged (58%). Battery Level C: 64% charged (64%). Comparing as percents: 58% < 60% < 64%. Battery C has the greatest remaining charge, followed by Battery A, and then Battery B.

Exercises

Exercise 1. Compare each pair using <, >, or =: (a) 4/5 and 82%; (b) 0.35 and 3/8; (c) 125% and 1 and 1/4.

Exercise 2. Arrange the following four numbers in ascending order: 0.65, 2/3, 62%, 5/8.

Exercise 3. Three athletes completed their training regimens: Athlete X completed 7/8 of the regimen; Athlete Y completed 85%; Athlete Z completed 0.88. Rank the athletes from greatest portion completed to least portion completed.

Solutions

Solution to Exercise 1. For (a) 4/5 and 82%: convert 4/5 to percent: 4/5 = 80/100 = 80%; comparing 80% and 82%: 80% < 82%, so 4/5 < 82%. For (b) 0.35 and 3/8: convert 3/8 to decimal: 3/8 = 0.375; comparing 0.350 and 0.375: 0.350 < 0.375, so 0.35 < 3/8. For (c) 125% and 1 and 1/4: convert 1 and 1/4 to percent: 1 and 1/4 = 1.25 = 125%; both values are equal, so 125% = 1 and 1/4.

Solution to Exercise 2. Convert all four numbers to decimals with three decimal places: 0.65 = 0.650; 2/3 = 0.666...; 62% = 0.620; 5/8 = 0.625. Compare values from least to greatest: 0.620 is smallest (62%). Next is 0.625 (5/8). Next is 0.650 (0.65). Greatest is 0.666... (2/3). The ascending order is: 62% < 5/8 < 0.65 < 2/3.

Solution to Exercise 3. Convert all three athletic portions to decimals: Athlete X: 7/8 = 0.875; Athlete Y: 85% = 0.850; Athlete Z: 0.88 = 0.880. Compare values in descending order (greatest to least): 0.880 > 0.875 > 0.850. The ranking from greatest to least portion completed is: Athlete Z (0.88), Athlete X (7/8), Athlete Y (85%).
