Comparing & Ordering Numbers - Sixth Grade Mathematics

Comparing and ordering numbers is an essential mathematical skill that enables you to evaluate magnitudes, rank real-world datasets, and determine relative values accurately.

The Logic of Numerical Comparison

Comparing two whole numbers means determining whether one quantity is greater than, less than, or equal to another. We express these relationships using mathematical inequality symbols and the equality symbol.

+-------------------------------------------------------------------------+
| INEQUALITY AND EQUALITY SYMBOLS |
+---------+-----------------------+---------------------------------------+
| Symbol  | Meaning               | Example Statement                     |
+---------+-----------------------+---------------------------------------+
|   >     | Is greater than       | 8,450,000 > 8,390,000                 |
|   <     | Is less than          | 12,405,100 < 12,410,000               |
|   =     | Is equal to           | 5,000,000 = 5 * 10^6                  |

The Principle of Digit Count

The first step when comparing any two positive whole numbers is to count their total number of digits. If two numbers have an unequal number of digits, the number with more digits is automatically the greater number. For example, 1,000,002 has seven digits, while 998,750 has only six digits. Even though 9 is greater than 1, 1,000,002 is greater because its highest place value is in the millions column, whereas 998,750 reaches only the hundred thousands column.

Comparing Numbers with Equal Digit Counts

When two numbers contain the exact same number of digits, compare them place by place, starting from the leftmost (highest) place value column and moving systematically toward the right. Find the first place value position where the digits differ. The number with the greater digit at that specific position is the greater number overall.

Step 1: Compare leftmost digits (Ten Millions)
        4 5, 8 2 1, 0 0 0
        4 5, 8 9 0, 0 0 0
        Both start with 4. Continue rightward.

Step 2: Compare Millions (both 5), then Hundred Thousands (both 8).
        Continue rightward to Ten Thousands:
        4 5, 8 [2] 1, 0 0 0   --> 2 in Ten Thousands
        4 5, 8 [9] 0, 0 0 0   --> 9 in Ten Thousands

Conclusion: Since 9 > 2, 45,890,000 > 45,821,000.

Ordering Sets of Numbers

Ordering involves arranging three or more numbers in a specific sequence based on their values.

Ascending Order: Smallest to Greatest (Values increase as you move right)
                   [ 124,500 ]  -->  [ 129,000 ]  -->  [ 201,300 ]

Descending Order: Greatest to Smallest (Values decrease as you move right)
                   [ 201,300 ]  -->  [ 129,000 ]  -->  [ 124,500 ]

Constructing Ascending Sequences

To arrange a list of numbers in ascending order, first group the numbers by their digit counts. The numbers with the fewest digits are evaluated first. Among numbers with the same digit count, apply the left-to-right place value comparison rule to sort them from least to greatest. Write the final sequence separated by the less-than symbol (<) or commas.

Constructing Descending Sequences

Descending order reverses the perspective. You identify the number with the greatest magnitude first and proceed downward to the smallest value. In scientific contexts such as planetary masses or deep ocean trenches, descending order presents data from most massive to least massive, or deepest to shallowest.

Practical Strategies for Error Prevention

Working with numbers containing seven, eight, or nine digits increases the likelihood of copying errors or misplaced columns.

Aligning Numbers in Vertical Columns

When comparing a list of multiple large numbers, write them in a neat vertical column with their ones digits strictly aligned. This vertical alignment ensures that you are comparing digits of identical place values rather than accidentally comparing a hundred thousands digit with a ten thousands digit.

Using Number Line Mental Models

Mentally visualizing numbers along a horizontal number line reinforces understanding. On a horizontal number line, values increase from left to right. Any number positioned to the right of another number is greater, while any number to the left is smaller.

Exercises

Exercise 1. Compare the following pair of numbers using >, <, or =: 34,582,109 and 34,589,012. Explain the step-by-step reasoning.

Exercise 2. Arrange the following four numbers in ascending order: 5,420,100; 542,900; 5,419,850; 5,420,090.

Exercise 3. The populations of four cities are 1,284,500; 1,289,100; 948,000; and 1,284,550. Order the cities from greatest to least population.

Solutions

Solution to Exercise 1. Both 34,582,109 and 34,589,012 have eight digits. Comparing from the left, the ten millions digits are identical (3), the millions digits are identical (4), and the hundred thousands digits are identical (5). In the ten thousands place, the first number has an 8 and the second number has an 8. Moving to the thousands place, the first number has a 2, while the second number has a 9. Since 2 is less than 9, 34,582,109 < 34,589,012.

Solution to Exercise 2. First, count the digits of each number: 542,900 has 6 digits, while the other three numbers each have 7 digits. Therefore, 542,900 is the smallest. Next, compare the three 7-digit numbers: 5,420,100; 5,419,850; and 5,420,090. Looking at their thousands period, 5,419,850 has 419 thousands, while the other two have 420 thousands, making 5,419,850 the second smallest. Comparing 5,420,100 and 5,420,090, both have 5 millions and 420 thousands, but 5,420,090 has 0 hundreds whereas 5,420,100 has 1 hundred. Thus, the ascending order is 542,900 < 5,419,850 < 5,420,090 < 5,420,100.

Solution to Exercise 3. To arrange the populations in descending order (greatest to least), identify that 948,000 has only six digits, making it the least. The other three numbers each have seven digits and begin with 1,280,000. Comparing 1,289,100 with 1,284,500 and 1,284,550, the number 1,289,100 has 9 in the thousands place, making it the greatest. Between 1,284,550 and 1,284,500, both share the same thousands and hundreds digits, but 1,284,550 has 5 in the tens place compared to 0. Therefore, the ordered list from greatest to least is 1,289,100; 1,284,550; 1,284,500; 948,000.
