TimeZones, Elapsed Time & Precision - Sixth Grade Mathematics
Calculating elapsed time across calendar and clock boundaries, navigating global time zones, and evaluating stopwatch precision connects sexagesimal (base-60) time mathematics to real-world scheduling.
The Base-60 (Sexagesimal) Structure of Time
Unlike decimal units, time measurement is rooted in ancient Babylonian base-60 arithmetic. 60 seconds = 1 minute 60 minutes = 1 hour 24 hours = 1 solar day 7 days = 1 week 365 days (or 366 days in a leap year) = 1 calendar year
The Regrouping Rule for Time:
When adding time, 60 minutes REGROUPS to 1 hour (NOT 100 minutes!).
When borrowing time in subtraction, 1 hour DECOMPOSES into 60 minutes!
Calculating Elapsed Time
Elapsed time is the total duration that passes from a starting event to an ending event. The most reliable method is the "Timeline Chunking Method", which counts forward to the next whole hour benchmark.
Problem: A movie starts at 7:45 PM and ends at 10:18 PM.
What is the elapsed running time?
Step 1: Chunk to the next nearest whole hour:
From 7:45 PM to 8:00 PM --> 15 minutes.
Step 2: Chunk across full hours:
From 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM --> 2 hours.
Step 3: Chunk to the final ending minutes:
From 10:00 PM to 10:18 PM--> 18 minutes.
Step 4: Combine all chunks:
2 hours + (15 min + 18 min) = 2 hours 33 minutes.
Regrouping in Time Subtraction
To calculate elapsed time by subtraction: 10 hr 18 min - 7 hr 45 min. You cannot subtract 45 minutes from 18 minutes. Decompose 1 hour from 10 hours: 10 hours becomes 9 hours, and add 60 minutes to 18 minutes: 18 + 60 = 78 minutes. Now subtract: 9 hr 78 min - 7 hr 45 min = 2 hr 33 min.
Global Time Zones and Solar Time
Because the Earth rotates 360 degrees on its axis once every 24 hours, the planet rotates 360 / 24 = 15 degrees of longitude each hour. Earth is divided into 24 standard longitudinal time zones.

Navigating East-to-West Flight Schedules
When traveling across time zones: Traveling East: Add hours (the clock moves forward). Traveling West: Subtract hours (the clock moves backward). To calculate actual flight duration: convert departure and arrival times to the same time zone before calculating elapsed time.
Exercises
Exercise 1. A train departs station A at 8:35 AM and arrives at station B at 1:12 PM. Calculate the total elapsed travel time.
Exercise 2. Perform the time subtraction with regrouping: 6 hours 15 minutes minus 2 hours 48 minutes.
Exercise 3. A live sports broadcast begins in New York (Eastern Time) at 8:00 PM. At what local time should a viewer in Los Angeles (Pacific Time, 3 hours behind Eastern) tune in to watch the broadcast?
Solutions
Solution to Exercise 1. Use the benchmark chunking method: From 8:35 AM to 9:00 AM is 25 minutes. From 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM is 4 hours. From 1:00 PM to 1:12 PM is 12 minutes. Sum the chunks: 4 hours + (25 min + 12 min) = 4 hours 37 minutes total travel time.
Solution to Exercise 2. Set up: 6 hr 15 min - 2 hr 48 min. Borrow 1 hour from 6 hours: 6 hours becomes 5 hours. Add 60 minutes to 15 minutes: 15 + 60 = 75 minutes. The expression becomes: 5 hr 75 min - 2 hr 48 min. Subtract minutes: 75 - 48 = 27 minutes. Subtract hours: 5 - 2 = 3 hours. Result: 3 hours 27 minutes.
Solution to Exercise 3. Los Angeles operates on Pacific Time, which is 3 hours behind Eastern Time. Subtract 3 hours from 8:00 PM: 8:00 PM - 3 hours = 5:00 PM. The viewer in Los Angeles must tune in at 5:00 PM Pacific Time.
