Surface Area of Pyramids - Sixth Grade Mathematics
The surface area of a pyramid combines the area of its single polygonal base with the collective areas of its triangular lateral faces that converge at a common apex.
Anatomy and Dimensions of Pyramids
Understanding pyramid surface area requires distinguishing between the height of the pyramid and the slant height of its triangular faces.

Two Crucial Heights:
1. Pyramid Height (h): The vertical distance from the apex straight down to the base center.
Forms a right angle with the base floor (used for Volume).
2. Slant Height (l): The altitude of each triangular lateral face, measured along the slope
from the apex to the midpoint of a base edge (used for Surface Area).
Surface Area of a Square Pyramid
A square pyramid has one square base of side length s and four congruent triangular lateral faces. Each triangle has base s and height equal to the slant height l.

Surface Area Formula for Square Pyramid:
SA = (Area of Base) + 4 * (Area of one lateral triangle)
SA = s^2 + 4 * [(1 / 2) * s * l]
SA = s^2 + 2sl
Worked Example:
Find the surface area of a square pyramid with base side length 6 cm and slant height 8 cm.
Step 1: Calculate Base Area:
Base = s^2 = 6^2 = 36 cm^2.
Step 2: Calculate Lateral Faces:
Area of one triangle = (1 / 2) * base * slant height = (1 / 2) * 6 * 8 = 24 cm^2.
All 4 triangles = 4 * 24 = 96 cm^2.
Step 3: Sum together:
Total SA = 36 + 96 = 132 square centimeters.
Surface Area of a Regular Triangular Pyramid (Tetrahedron)
A triangular pyramid has a triangular base and three triangular lateral faces. If all four triangular faces are identical equilateral triangles, the solid is a regular tetrahedron.
Triangular Pyramid Surface Area:
SA = Base Area + Sum of 3 Lateral Triangle Areas
Example: A triangular pyramid has a base area of 28 cm^2.
The base perimeter is composed of three 8 cm sides, and each lateral face
has a slant height of 10 cm.
Step 1: Base Area = 28 cm^2.
Step 2: Lateral Area = 3 * [(1 / 2) * 8 * 10] = 3 * 40 = 120 cm^2.
Step 3: Total Surface Area = 28 + 120 = 148 cm^2.
Rectangular Pyramids (Non-Square Bases)
If the base of a pyramid is a non-square rectangle with length l and width w, the lateral triangular faces are not all congruent! The front and back triangles have base l and slant height l_1, while the left and right triangles have base w and slant height l_2. Each opposing pair must be computed separately.
Exercises
Exercise 1. Calculate the total surface area of a square pyramid with: (a) Base side 5 inches and slant height 9 inches; (b) Base side 10 meters and slant height 14 meters; (c) Base side 3.5 cm and slant height 6 cm.
Exercise 2. A regular tetrahedron has four identical equilateral triangular faces. If the area of one face is 15.6 square centimeters, what is the total surface area of the tetrahedron?
Exercise 3. A glass souvenir shaped like a square pyramid has a base perimeter of 24 cm and a slant height of 7 cm. Find the total surface area of the souvenir.
Exercise 4. A company designs a pyramid-shaped tent with a square base of 8 feet by 8 feet and a slant height of 10 feet. The floor is made of tarp, while the four triangular sides are canvas. (a) How many square feet of canvas are required for the tent walls? (b) What is the total surface area of the tent including the floor?
Solutions
Solution to Exercise 1. For (a), Base = 5^2 = 25 in.^2. Lateral area = 4 * [(1/2) * 5 * 9] = 4 * 22.5 = 90 in.^2. Total SA = 25 + 90 = 115 square inches. For (b), Base = 10^2 = 100 m^2. Lateral area = 4 * [(1/2) * 10 * 14] = 4 * 70 = 280 m^2. Total SA = 100 + 280 = 380 square meters. For (c), Base = 3.5^2 = 12.25 cm^2. Lateral area = 4 * [(1/2) * 3.5 * 6] = 4 * 10.5 = 42 cm^2. Total SA = 12.25 + 42 = 54.25 square centimeters.
Solution to Exercise 2. Because all 4 faces of a regular tetrahedron are congruent: Total SA = 4 * 15.6 = 62.4 square centimeters.
Solution to Exercise 3. The perimeter of the square base is 24 cm, so each side length is s = 24 / 4 = 6 cm. Base Area = 6^2 = 36 cm^2. Lateral Area = 4 * [(1/2) * 6 * 7] = 4 * 21 = 84 cm^2. Total Surface Area = 36 + 84 = 120 square centimeters.
Solution to Exercise 4. For (a), canvas covers only the 4 triangular lateral faces: Lateral Area = 4 * [(1/2) * 8 * 10] = 4 * 40 = 160 square feet of canvas. For (b), Floor Area = 8 * 8 = 64 ft^2. Total Surface Area including the floor = 160 + 64 = 224 square feet.
