Area of Rectangles and Squares: Fifth Grade Mathematics

Area measures the total number of square units needed to cover the interior surface of a flat two-dimensional region without any gaps or overlaps.

The Area Formula for Rectangles and Squares

Area is measured in square units (such as square inches, square centimeters, or square meters). Instead of counting individual unit squares one by one, multiplication gives the total count:
- Rectangle Area: Area = length * width (A = l * w)

- Square Area: Area = side * side (A = s^2)

Area Versus Perimeter Distinction

Perimeter measures the one-dimensional outer boundary (fence), while area measures the two-dimensional interior coverage (grass or carpet). Two shapes can have identical perimeters while having vastly different areas:
- Rectangle A (1 by 7): Perimeter = 16, Area = 7 square units.

- Rectangle B (4 by 4): Perimeter = 16, Area = 16 square units.

- For a fixed perimeter, a square always maximizes the enclosed area.

Finding a Missing Dimension Using Division

If the total area and one dimension are known:
- Length = Area / Width (l = A / w)

- Width = Area / Length (w = A / l)

Example: A rectangle has an area of 84 sq cm and a width of 7 cm.
Length = 84 / 7 = 12 cm.

Exercises and Solutions

Exercise 1: Area Computation with Multi-Digit Dimensions. A community gym floor is a rectangle measuring 42 meters long and 28 meters wide. Calculate the area of the gym floor in square meters.

Solution 1: Apply the rectangle area formula: Area = length * width. Multiply 42 by 28: 42 * 28. Partial products: 42 * 8 = 336; 42 * 20 = 840. Sum of partial products: 336 + 840 = 1,176 square meters. The area of the gym floor is 1,176 square meters (m^2).

Exercise 2: Finding a Missing Side from Area. A square garden bed has an area of 144 square feet. Find the length of each side and calculate the total perimeter of the garden bed.

Solution 2: For a square, Area = side * side (s^2 = 144). Find the number that multiplies by itself to equal 144: since 12 * 12 = 144, each side of the square measures 12 feet. Now find the perimeter: P = 4s = 4 * 12 = 48 feet. The side length is 12 feet and the perimeter is 48 feet.
