Order of Operations (PEMDAS): Fifth Grade Mathematics
The Order of Operations provides a universal set of rules ensuring that mathematical expressions have one consistent, unambiguous value.
Why a Standard Order is Essential
Without an established order of operations, an expression like 3 + 4 * 5 could produce two different answers:
- Adding first: (3 + 4) * 5 = 7 * 5 = 35.
- Multiplying first: 3 + (4 * 5) = 3 + 20 = 23.
Mathematicians agreed upon PEMDAS so that every person worldwide calculates the exact same result: 23.

THE PEMDAS ORDER OF OPERATIONS HIERARCHY

Step 1: [ P ] Parentheses and grouping symbols: (), [], {}
Step 2: [ E ] Exponents: 10^2, 5^3
Step 3: [ M / D ] Multiplication and Division FROM LEFT TO RIGHT
Step 4: [ A / S ] Addition and Subtraction FROM LEFT TO RIGHT

Crucial Rule: Multiplication does NOT always come before division!
Addition does NOT always come before subtraction! Whichever appears
first moving left to right takes precedence within each tier.

The Left-to-Right Tie-Breaking Rule
Multiplication and division share equal rank on the third tier. Addition and subtraction share equal rank on the fourth tier. When operations of equal rank appear together, evaluate them in left-to-right reading order.
Evaluating 24 / 4 * 2:
Incorrect: 24 / (4 * 2) = 24 / 8 = 3 (Gave multiplication false priority!)
Correct: (24 / 4) * 2 = 6 * 2 = 12 (Left-to-right rule applied!)
Evaluating 15 - 8 + 3:
Incorrect: 15 - (8 + 3) = 15 - 11 = 4 (Gave addition false priority!)
Correct: (15 - 8) + 3 = 7 + 3 = 10 (Left-to-right rule applied!)
Step-by-Step Expression Evaluation
To evaluate a complex expression, rewrite the entire expression on a new line after each single operation is completed, forming an inverted pyramid.
Evaluating: 8 + (14 - 5) * 3 - 10 / 2
Step 1: Parentheses (14 - 5 = 9):
8 + 9 * 3 - 10 / 2
Step 2: Multiply and Divide left-to-right (9 * 3 = 27):
8 + 27 - 10 / 2
Step 3: Divide (10 / 2 = 5):
8 + 27 - 5
Step 4: Add and Subtract left-to-right (8 + 27 = 35):
35 - 5
Step 5: Subtract:
30
Exercises and Solutions
Exercise 1: Step-by-Step PEMDAS Evaluation. Evaluate the numerical expression 42 - 6 * (2 + 3) + 16 / 4. Show every intermediate line of calculation and state the rule applied at each step.
Solution 1: Step 1: Evaluate grouping symbols inside parentheses: (2 + 3) = 5. Rewrite: 42 - 6 * 5 + 16 / 4. Step 2: Perform multiplication and division from left to right. The first is 6 * 5 = 30. Rewrite: 42 - 30 + 16 / 4. The second is division: 16 / 4 = 4. Rewrite: 42 - 30 + 4. Step 3: Perform addition and subtraction from left to right. The first is subtraction: 42 - 30 = 12. Rewrite: 12 + 4. Step 4: Perform final addition: 12 + 4 = 16. The final value is 16.
Exercise 2: Left-to-Right Precedence Challenge. Evaluate the expression 36 / 6 * 3 - 8 + 5. Explain how the left-to-right rule applies to both pairs of equal-tier operations.
Solution 2: On the multiplication and division tier, division appears first from the left: 36 / 6 = 6. Multiplying this by 3 gives 6 * 3 = 18. Rewrite: 18 - 8 + 5. On the addition and subtraction tier, subtraction appears first from the left: 18 - 8 = 10. Adding 5 gives 10 + 5 = 15. The final value is 15.
