Nets of 3D Solids & Surface Area Concepts: Fifth Grade Mathematics
A net is an unfolded, flat two-dimensional pattern that can be folded along straight creases to form a three-dimensional solid figure.
What is a Net?
If you were to cut along the edges of a cardboard box and lay it completely flat, the resulting 2D template is the net of that box. Examining a net allows you to see all the individual 2D faces of a 3D solid at once.

Introduction to Surface Area
Surface area is the total 2D area covering the outside of a 3D solid figure. Surface area is measured in square units (sq cm, sq in, sq ft).
To calculate surface area:
1. Find the 2D area of each individual face shown in the net.
2. Sum the areas of all faces together.
Surface Area Formula for a Rectangular Prism:
A rectangular prism has 3 pairs of matching opposite faces:
- 2 Front/Back faces: 2 * (length * height)
- 2 Top/Bottom faces: 2 * (length * width)
- 2 Left/Right faces: 2 * (width * height)
Total Surface Area (SA) = 2lw + 2lh + 2wh
Exercises and Solutions
Exercise 1: Matching Nets to Solids. Describe the 2D shapes that make up the net of: Part A: A cube. Part B: A triangular prism. Part C: A cylinder.
Solution 1: Part A: The net of a cube consists of 6 congruent squares arranged in an unfolded T-shape or cross pattern. Part B: The net of a triangular prism consists of 2 congruent triangles (the bases) and 3 rectangles (the lateral faces). Part C: The net of a cylinder consists of 2 congruent circles (top and bottom bases) and 1 large rectangle (the unrolled lateral curved surface).
Exercise 2: Calculating Surface Area of a Box. A cardboard shipping box has a length of 5 inches, a width of 4 inches, and a height of 3 inches. Calculate the total surface area of the box using its net.
Solution 2: Calculate the area of the three pairs of faces: Pair 1 (Top and Bottom): 2 * (5 * 4) = 2 * 20 = 40 square inches. Pair 2 (Front and Back): 2 * (5 * 3) = 2 * 15 = 30 square inches. Pair 3 (Left and Right): 2 * (4 * 3) = 2 * 12 = 24 square inches. Sum the areas of all 6 faces: Surface Area = 40 + 30 + 24 = 94 square inches.
