Properties of Multiplication: Fifth Grade Mathematics

Mastering the mathematical properties of multiplication allows you to break down large factors, compute products efficiently, and understand algebraic structures.

Core Properties of Multiplication

Multiplication is governed by four core properties: Commutative, Associative, Identity, and Zero. Together with the Distributive Property, these form the engine of mental arithmetic and multi-digit algorithms.

+--------------------------------------------------------------------------+
| PROPERTIES OF MULTIPLICATION |
+---------------------+----------------------------+-----------------------+
| Property Name | Algebraic Formula | Numerical Example |
+---------------------+----------------------------+-----------------------+
| Commutative Property| a * b = b * a | 25 * 8 = 8 * 25 |
| Associative Property| (a * b) * c = a * (b * c) | (4 * 15) * 6 = |
| | | 4 * (15 * 6) |
| Identity Property | a * 1 = a | 9,842 * 1 = 9,842 |
| Zero Property | a * 0 = 0 | 7,510 * 0 = 0 |

The Commutative Property of Multiplication

The Commutative Property states that changing the order of factors does not change the product. Visually, an array with 4 rows of 6 dots contains the exact same count of dots as an array with 6 rows of 4 dots (24 dots total).

The Associative Property of Multiplication

The Associative Property states that changing the grouping of factors does not alter the product. When multiplying three factors, you can group factors that create friendly products like multiples of 10 or 100. For example, to calculate 25 * 19 * 4, use the Commutative Property to rearrange as 19 * (25 * 4). Since 25 * 4 = 100, the product 19 * 100 = 1,900 is found instantly.

Identity and Zero Properties

The Identity Property establishes that 1 is the multiplicative identity; any value multiplied by 1 maintains its identity. The Zero Property states that the product of zero and any number is always zero, representing zero groups of an amount.

The Distributive Property of Multiplication over Addition

The Distributive Property is the cornerstone of all multi-digit multiplication. It states that multiplying a sum by a factor is equivalent to multiplying each addend separately and adding the resulting partial products.

Decomposing Factors into Expanded Form

To calculate 6 * 428 mentally, decompose 428 into its expanded form: 400 + 20 + 8. Distribute the 6 to each addend: (6 * 400) + (6 * 20) + (6 * 8) = 2,400 + 120 + 48 = 2,568.

Distributive Property over Subtraction

The Distributive Property also applies to subtraction: a * (b - c) = (a * b) - (a * c). To multiply 7 * 99, rewrite 99 as (100 - 1). Applying the property: (7 * 100) - (7 * 1) = 700 - 7 = 693.

Exercises and Solutions

Exercise 1: Applying the Distributive Property. Use the Distributive Property to solve 9 * 524 by decomposing 524 into expanded form. Show each partial product and the final sum.

Solution 1: Write 524 in expanded form as (500 + 20 + 4). Distribute the multiplier 9 to each term: (9 * 500) + (9 * 20) + (9 * 4). Calculate the partial products: 9 * 500 = 4,500; 9 * 20 = 180; 9 * 4 = 36. Add the partial products together: 4,500 + 180 + 36 = 4,716.

Exercise 2: Strategic Grouping with Properties. Solve the expression 50 * 73 * 2 using the Commutative and Associative Properties of Multiplication. Explain why this approach is faster than multiplying from left to right.

Solution 2: Multiplying 50 by 73 directly requires pencil-and-paper multi-digit arithmetic (3,650) before multiplying by 2. Using properties, reorder the factors using the Commutative Property to write 73 * (50 * 2). Group 50 and 2 using the Associative Property: 50 * 2 = 100. Now multiply 73 by 100 using base-ten place value rules to immediately get 7,300. This avoids lengthy calculations by creating a power of 10.
