Relating Multiplication and Division: Fifth Grade Mathematics
Multiplication and division are inverse mathematical operations that describe opposite actions on equal groups, forming interconnected fact families.
The Inverse Relationship Explained
Multiplication combines equal groups to find a total product, whereas division takes a total amount and splits it into equal groups or finds the size of each group.

MULTIPLICATION AND DIVISION AS INVERSES

Multiplication: Number of Groups * Size of Each Group = Total

Division (Partitive): Total / Number of Groups = Size of Group

Division (Quotative): Total / Size of Group = Number of Groups

Fact Families and Arrays
A fact family consists of four related mathematical facts using the same three numbers. For the numbers 14, 6, and 84:
- 14 * 6 = 84
- 6 * 14 = 84
- 84 / 6 = 14
- 84 / 14 = 6
Array Representation of 4 * 7 = 28:
* * * * * * *
* * * * * * * 4 rows of 7 = 28 total
* * * * * * * 28 divided into 4 rows gives 7 in each row
* * * * * * * 28 divided into columns of 4 gives 7 columns
Using Multiplication to Solve Division Problems
Whenever you encounter a division problem like 168 / 12 = ?, you can reframe it as a missing-factor multiplication problem: 12 * ? = 168.
Reframing Division as Multiplication:
Problem: 216 / 18 = ?
Think: 18 * ? = 216
Estimate: 18 * 10 = 180
Remaining: 216 - 180 = 36
Notice: 18 * 2 = 36
Total factor: 10 + 2 = 12
Therefore: 216 / 18 = 12
The Role of the Remainder
When a total cannot be divided into equal groups of whole numbers, the leftover amount is the remainder. The fundamental division relationship states: (Divisor * Quotient) + Remainder = Dividend. For example, in 47 / 5 = 9 with a remainder of 2: (5 * 9) + 2 = 45 + 2 = 47.
Division by Zero is Undefined
You cannot divide any number by zero. If you ask what 7 / 0 equals, reframing it as a multiplication problem requires finding a number that satisfies 0 * ? = 7. Because any number multiplied by zero is zero, no solution exists. Thus, division by zero is mathematically undefined.
Exercises and Solutions
Exercise 1: Creating Fact Families. Write out the complete four-part fact family for the three numbers 18, 15, and 270.
Solution 1: The two multiplication equations are: 18 * 15 = 270 and 15 * 18 = 270. The two corresponding division equations are: 270 / 15 = 18 and 270 / 18 = 15.
Exercise 2: Checking Division with Remainders. A division problem yields the result 348 / 14 = 24 with a remainder of 12. Use the inverse relationship between multiplication and division to prove whether this calculation is correct.
Solution 2: Apply the verification formula: (Divisor * Quotient) + Remainder = Dividend. First, multiply the divisor 14 by the quotient 24: 14 * 24 = 336. Next, add the remainder 12: 336 + 12 = 348. Because the result equals the original dividend 348, the division calculation is verified as correct.
