Reading and Plotting Ordered Pairs: Fifth Grade Mathematics
Ordered pairs locate points on a coordinate plane using two coordinates written in a strict, unchangeable sequence: (x, y).
The Strict Order of Ordered Pairs
An ordered pair is written inside parentheses separated by a comma: (x, y). The order of the numbers is critical:
- The first number is the x-coordinate, indicating how many units to move horizontally along the x-axis from the origin.
- The second number is the y-coordinate, indicating how many units to move vertically along the y-axis.

THE (x, y) MOVEMENT ALGORITHM

Rule: "Crawl before you climb" or "Walk across, then take elevator"

To plot point (4, 3):
1. Start at the Origin (0, 0).
2. Move RIGHT 4 units along the horizontal x-axis.
3. Move UP 3 units parallel to the vertical y-axis.
4. Draw a solid dot and label the point: (4, 3).
+--------------------------------------------------------------------------+
Comparing (4, 2) versus (2, 4):
Point A (4, 2): 4 units right, 2 units up.
Point B (2, 4): 2 units right, 4 units up.
These are two completely different locations on the grid!
Points Located on the Axes
When one of the coordinates is zero, the point lies directly on one of the axes rather than in the open space of the grid:
- If y = 0, the point (x, 0) lies directly on the horizontal x-axis (e.g., (5, 0) is 5 units right, 0 units up).
- If x = 0, the point (0, y) lies directly on the vertical y-axis (e.g., (0, 6) is 0 units right, 6 units up).
Exercises and Solutions
Exercise 1: Plotting Instructions and Coordinates on Axes. Describe the step-by-step movement starting from the origin to plot the point (6, 0) and the point (0, 5). State which axis each point rests upon.
Solution 1: To plot (6, 0): begin at the origin (0, 0). Move 6 units to the right along the horizontal x-axis. Because the y-coordinate is 0, do not move up. Plot the point directly on the horizontal line; (6, 0) rests on the x-axis. To plot (0, 5): begin at the origin (0, 0). Because the x-coordinate is 0, do not move right. Move 5 units straight up along the vertical y-axis. Plot the point directly on the vertical line; (0, 5) rests on the y-axis.
Exercise 2: Identifying Swapped Coordinates Error. A student is asked to plot the location of a school located at (3, 7). The student moves 7 units to the right from the origin and 3 units up, placing the point at (7, 3). Explain the student's mistake and state how to correct it.
Solution 2: The student reversed the order of the coordinates, plotting (y, x) instead of (x, y). In an ordered pair, the first number represents horizontal movement along the x-axis, and the second represents vertical movement along the y-axis. To correct the error, the student must start at the origin, move horizontally to the right 3 units (the x-coordinate), and then move vertically up 7 units (the y-coordinate).
