Subtracting Mixed Numbers: Fifth Grade Mathematics
Subtracting mixed numbers without regrouping requires finding common denominators, subtracting fractions, and subtracting whole numbers.
The Basic Subtraction Procedure
When the fractional part of the first mixed number (minuend) is larger than the fractional part of the second mixed number (subtrahend), subtraction proceeds straightforwardly without regrouping.
+--------------------------------------------------------------------------+
SUBTRACTING MIXED NUMBERS (NO REGROUPING)

Problem: 5 7/8 - 2 1/4

Step 1: Find LCD of 8 and 4: LCD = 8
Step 2: Rename fractions:
5 7/8 = 5 7/8
2 1/4 = 2 2/8
Step 3: Subtract fractions: 7/8 - 2/8 = 5/8
Step 4: Subtract wholes: 5 - 2 = 3
Step 5: Combine parts: 3 5/8
+--------------------------------------------------------------------------+
Checking for Simplification
Always verify whether the resulting fraction can be simplified. In 8 9/10 - 3 3/10 = 5 6/10, simplifying 6/10 yields 5 3/5.
Using Improper Fractions as an Alternative Method
An alternative strategy is converting both mixed numbers into improper fractions before subtracting. This method eliminates the need to worry about regrouping, but can produce large numerators:
- 3 1/3 - 1 1/2 = 10/3 - 3/2 = 20/6 - 9/6 = 11/6 = 1 5/6.
Exercises and Solutions
Exercise 1: Standard Mixed Subtraction. Solve 7 5/6 - 3 1/4. Show all steps including finding the LCD, renaming, subtracting wholes and fractions, and simplifying.
Solution 1: Find the LCD of 6 and 4: multiples of 6 are 6, 12... Multiples of 4 are 4, 8, 12... LCD = 12. Rename fractions: 5/6 = (5 * 2) / (6 * 2) = 10/12, so 7 5/6 = 7 10/12. 1/4 = (1 * 3) / (4 * 3) = 3/12, so 3 1/4 = 3 3/12. Subtract the fractions: 10/12 - 3/12 = 7/12. Subtract the whole numbers: 7 - 3 = 4. Combine parts: 4 7/12. Since GCF(7, 12) = 1, 4 7/12 is in simplest form.
Exercise 2: Ribbon Cutting Problem. A craft spool contains 9 3/4 yards of decorative ribbon. An artist cuts off 4 2/5 yards for a project. How many yards of ribbon remain on the spool?
Solution 2: Subtract 4 2/5 from 9 3/4. Find LCD of 4 and 5: 4 and 5 share no common factors, so LCD = 20. Rename fractions: 3/4 = (3 * 5) / (4 * 5) = 15/20, so 9 3/4 = 9 15/20. 2/5 = (2 * 4) / (5 * 4) = 8/20, so 4 2/5 = 4 8/20. Subtract fractions: 15/20 - 8/20 = 7/20. Subtract whole numbers: 9 - 4 = 5. Combine: 5 7/20 yards of ribbon remain.
