Understanding Fractions & Division: Fifth Grade Mathematics

Fractions represent equal parts of a whole or set, and serve as an alternative notation for mathematical division.

Fractions as Division Expressions

In fifth grade, the fraction bar is recognized as a division symbol. The fraction a/b represents the division expression a / b, where the numerator is the dividend and the denominator is the divisor.

Visualizing Division Yielding a Fraction

Imagine sharing 3 whole personal pizzas equally among 4 friends.
- How can 3 whole pizzas be divided among 4 people?

- Slice each of the 3 pizzas into 4 equal quarters.

- Each person receives 1 quarter from each pizza.

- 1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4 = 3/4 of a pizza per person.

- Thus, 3 / 4 = 3/4.

Visual Model: 3 Pizzas Shared by 4 People
  Pizza 1: [ 1/4 ][ 1/4 ][ 1/4 ][ 1/4 ]  ---> Person A gets 1/4
  Pizza 2: [ 1/4 ][ 1/4 ][ 1/4 ][ 1/4 ]  ---> Person A gets 1/4
  Pizza 3: [ 1/4 ][ 1/4 ][ 1/4 ][ 1/4 ]  ---> Person A gets 1/4

  Total for Person A: 1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4 = 3/4

Denominators Cannot Be Zero

Just as division by zero is undefined in whole numbers, a fraction can never have a denominator of 0. Writing 5/0 is mathematically undefined because you cannot divide a quantity into zero equal shares.

Exercises and Solutions

Exercise 1: Interpreting Sharing as Fractions. Five runners share 3 liters of water equally after a race. Write a division expression and an equivalent fraction to represent how much water each runner receives, and explain the meaning of the numerator and denominator.

Solution 1: The division expression is 3 / 5 (3 liters divided among 5 runners). As a fraction, this is written as 3/5 liters. The numerator 3 represents the total quantity being divided (3 liters of water). The denominator 5 represents the number of equal shares being created (5 runners). Each runner receives 3/5 of a liter.

Exercise 2: Division Result Exceeding One Whole. Seven sandwiches are shared equally among 4 campers. Express the amount of sandwich each camper receives as both an improper fraction and a mixed number.

Solution 2: The division expression is 7 / 4. As an improper fraction, this is written as 7/4 sandwiches. To convert to a mixed number, divide 7 by 4: 4 goes into 7 one whole time with a remainder of 3. Thus, 7/4 = 1 3/4 sandwiches. Each camper receives 1 whole sandwich and 3/4 of another sandwich.
