Mental Math Strategies for Multiplication: Fifth Grade Mathematics
Developing mental math strategies allows you to compute multiplication products quickly and accurately in your head by transforming complex numbers into friendly values.
Halving and Doubling Strategy
The Halving and Doubling strategy relies on the principle that if you divide one factor by 2 and multiply the other factor by 2, the overall product remains identical. This is especially useful when one factor is even and the other ends in 5.
+--------------------------------------------------------------------------+
HALVING AND DOUBLING METHOD

Problem: 16 * 35

Step 1: Halve 16 (divide by 2) ---> 8
Step 2: Double 35 (multiply by 2) -> 70

New Problem: 8 * 70 = 560

Both expressions equal 560, but 8 * 70 can be done instantly!

Repeated Halving and Doubling
You can repeat the halving and doubling process multiple times until you reach an extremely simple multiplication fact. For example, to solve 28 * 25: halve 28 to 14, double 25 to 50; repeat once more: halve 14 to 7, double 50 to 100. Now calculate 7 * 100 = 700.
Compensation Strategies
Compensation involves adjusting a factor to a nearby multiple of 10 or 100 to make multiplication easy, and then compensating by adding or subtracting the extra amount.
Multiplying by 19 using Compensation:
Problem: 45 * 19
Round 19 up to 20: 45 * 20 = 900
Compensate by subtracting: 900 - (45 * 1) = 900 - 45 = 855
Multiplying by 21 using Compensation:
Problem: 34 * 21
Round 21 down to 20: 34 * 20 = 680
Compensate by adding: 680 + (34 * 1) = 680 + 34 = 714
Multiplying by 25 Using the Quarter Strategy
Because 25 is one-fourth of 100 (100 / 4 = 25), multiplying any number by 25 can be achieved by multiplying the number by 100 and then dividing by 4, or dividing by 4 first and multiplying by 100. To solve 36 * 25: compute 36 / 4 = 9, and then 9 * 100 = 900.
Multiplying by 50 Using the Half Strategy
Similarly, because 50 is half of 100, multiplying a number by 50 can be done by dividing the number by 2 and appending two zeros (multiplying by 100). For example, 64 * 50 = (64 / 2) * 100 = 32 * 100 = 3,200.
Breaking Apart Factors by Place Value
Breaking apart factors mentally uses the Distributive Property in your head. Decompose one factor into tens and ones, multiply each part by the other factor, and sum the partial products.
Mental Calculation of 7 * 63:
Think: (7 * 60) + (7 * 3)
Step 1: 7 * 60 = 420
Step 2: 7 * 3 = 21
Step 3: 420 + 21 = 441
Exercises and Solutions
Exercise 1: Halving and Doubling Application. Use the halving and doubling strategy to mentally calculate 18 * 45. Write down each transformation step and state the final product.
Solution 1: Take the even factor 18 and divide it by 2 to get 9. Take the other factor 45 and multiply it by 2 to get 90. The transformed multiplication expression is 9 * 90. Multiply the basic fact 9 * 9 = 81 and append the zero from the tens place, resulting in 810. Therefore, 18 * 45 = 810.
Exercise 2: Compensation Method. Solve 56 * 29 using the compensation strategy. Explain how rounding to 30 simplifies the problem and how to adjust for the difference.
Solution 2: Round 29 up by 1 to 30. Calculate 56 * 30 mentally: 56 * 3 = 168, so 56 * 30 = 1,680. Because you calculated 30 groups of 56 instead of 29 groups, you have 1 extra group of 56. Compensate by subtracting that extra group: 1,680 - 56 = 1,624. Thus, 56 * 29 = 1,624.
