Metric Units of Mass (mg, g, kg): Fifth Grade Mathematics
Metric mass measures the amount of matter in an object using milligrams, grams, and kilograms.
The Units of Metric Mass
Mass is measured using three core metric units:
- Milligram (mg): Tiny mass (e.g., a grain of sand or dust speck weighs about 1 mg; 1 mg = 0.001 g).
- Gram (g): Standard base unit (e.g., a standard metal paperclip or dollar bill weighs about 1 g).
- Kilogram (kg): Heavy mass (e.g., a hardcover textbook or a pair of shoes weighs about 1 kg; 1 kg = 1,000 g).

| METRIC MASS CONVERSIONS |
+---------------------+----------------------------+-----------------------+
| Smaller Unit | Equivalence | Larger Unit |
+---------------------+----------------------------+-----------------------+
| Milligrams (mg) | 1,000 mg | = 1 gram (g) |
| Grams (g) | 1,000 g | = 1 kilogram (kg) |
| Milligrams (mg) | 1,000,000 mg | = 1 kilogram (kg) |

The 1,000 Conversion Factor
Notice that conversions between the common units of mass (mg to g, and g to kg) always use a factor of 1,000 (10^3):
- Larger to smaller: Multiply by 1,000 (shift decimal 3 places RIGHT).
- Smaller to larger: Divide by 1,000 (shift decimal 3 places LEFT).
Mass Conversions at a Glance:
5.4 kg ---> 5.4 * 1,000 = 5,400 g
850 g ---> 850 / 1,000 = 0.85 kg
0.25 g ---> 0.25 * 1,000 = 250 mg
65 mg ---> 65 / 1,000 = 0.065 g
Exercises and Solutions
Exercise 1: Mass Conversions. Convert the following mass measurements: Part A: Convert 3.75 kilograms to grams. Part B: Convert 4,200 milligrams to grams.
Solution 1: For Part A: Converting kg to g requires multiplying by 1,000. Shift decimal 3 places to the right: 3.75 * 1,000 = 3,750 grams. For Part B: Converting mg to g requires dividing by 1,000. Shift decimal 3 places to the left: 4,200 / 1,000 = 4.2 grams.
Exercise 2: Science Lab Word Problem. A scientist has 3 samples of a chemical powder with masses of 450 milligrams, 1.2 grams, and 0.005 kilograms. What is the total mass of the combined powder in grams?
Solution 2: Convert all three quantities into grams before adding. Sample 1: 450 mg / 1,000 = 0.45 grams. Sample 2: 1.2 grams (already in grams). Sample 3: 0.005 kg * 1,000 = 5 grams. Add the masses in grams: 0.45 + 1.2 + 5 = 6.65 grams. The total combined mass is 6.65 grams.
