Understanding Percent (Parts per 100): Fifth Grade Mathematics
Percent means "per hundred," representing a special ratio that compares any quantity to a benchmark whole of 100 parts.
The Concept of Percent: Parts per Hundred
The word percent comes from the Latin per centum, meaning "by the hundred." The percent symbol (%) represents a fraction with a denominator of 100: n% = n / 100 = n hundredths.

10x10 GRID REPRESENTATION OF PERCENT

- A 10x10 grid contains exactly 100 small squares.
- The entire full grid represents 100% (1 whole unit).
- Each individual small square represents 1% (1/100 = 0.01).
- Shading 37 squares represents 37% (37/100 = 0.37).
+--------------------------------------------------------------------------+
Visualizing Landmark Percentages:
100% = [ Entire 100-grid full ] = 1.0 Whole
50% = [ Exactly half the grid ] = 1/2 = 0.50
25% = [ One quarter of grid ] = 1/4 = 0.25
10% = [ One full column ] = 1/10 = 0.10
1% = [ One single tiny square ] = 1/100 = 0.01
Percent Greater Than 100% and Less Than 1%
- Percents greater than 100% represent more than one full whole. For example, 150% means 1 full grid of 100 squares plus 50 squares on a second grid (150/100 = 1.5).
- Percents less than 1% represent a fraction of a single hundredth square (e.g., 0.5% is half of one small square).
Finding Simple Benchmark Percents Mentally
- To find 50% of a number: divide by 2 (take half). E.g., 50% of 80 = 40.
- To find 25% of a number: divide by 4 (take half of half). E.g., 25% of 80 = 20.
- To find 10% of a number: divide by 10 (shift decimal 1 place left). E.g., 10% of 80 = 8.
- To find 1% of a number: divide by 100 (shift decimal 2 places left). E.g., 1% of 80 = 0.8.
Exercises and Solutions
Exercise 1: Grid Shading and Percent Representation. A 100-square grid has 64 squares shaded green, 20 squares shaded blue, and the remainder unshaded. State the percentage for each color and for the unshaded squares.
Solution 1: Since the grid contains exactly 100 squares, each square represents 1%. Green: 64 squares = 64%. Blue: 20 squares = 20%. To find the unshaded squares, subtract from 100: 100 - (64 + 20) = 100 - 84 = 16 squares = 16%. Sum of percentages: 64% + 20% + 16% = 100%.
Exercise 2: Mental Benchmark Percents. Calculate the following values mentally using benchmark percent strategies: Part A: 10% of $160. Part B: 50% of $160. Part C: 25% of $160.
Solution 2: Part A: To find 10%, divide by 10: 160 / 10 = $16. Part B: To find 50%, take half: 160 / 2 = $80. Part C: To find 25%, divide by 4 (or take half of 50%): 80 / 2 = $40.
