Customary Units of Length (in, ft, yd, mi): Fifth Grade Mathematics

Converting between customary units of length requires knowing the equivalence ratios and applying multiplication or division based on unit size.

The Customary Length Hierarchy

The U.S. Customary system uses four primary units to measure distance: inches (in), feet (ft), yards (yd), and miles (mi).

| Feet (ft) | 5,280 feet | = 1 mile (mi) |
| Yards (yd) | 1,760 yards | = 1 mile (mi) |

The Golden Rule of Unit Conversion

The core principle of measurement conversion dictates whether to multiply or divide:
- Converting from a LARGER unit to a SMALLER unit: MULTIPLY (because more small units are needed to fill the same length).

- Converting from a SMALLER unit to a LARGER unit: DIVIDE (because fewer large units are needed).

|       "Large to Small, MULTIPLY them all!"    (e.g., ft -> in: * 12)     |
| "Small to Large, DIVIDE is in charge!" (e.g., in -> ft: / 12) |

Mixed-Unit Measurements

Length measurements are frequently given in mixed units, such as 5 feet 7 inches. To convert mixed units to a single smaller unit:
1. Convert the larger unit to the smaller unit by multiplying: 5 feet * 12 = 60 inches.

2. Add the remaining smaller units: 60 + 7 = 67 inches.

Converting 76 inches to Feet and Inches:
  Divide by 12: 76 / 12 = 6 with a remainder of 4.
  Result: 6 feet 4 inches (or 6 4/12 ft = 6 1/3 ft).

Exercises and Solutions

Exercise 1: Two-Way Unit Conversion. Convert the following measurements: Part A: Convert 4 1/2 yards into inches. Part B: Convert 31,680 feet into miles.

Solution 1: For Part A: You are converting from a larger unit (yards) to a smaller unit (inches), so multiply. There are 36 inches in 1 yard. Multiply: 4 1/2 * 36 = (9/2) * 36 = 9 * 18 = 162 inches. For Part B: You are converting from a smaller unit (feet) to a larger unit (miles), so divide. There are 5,280 feet in 1 mile. Divide: 31,680 / 5,280 = 6 miles.

Exercise 2: Multi-Step Fencing Word Problem. A homeowner needs to build a wooden fence around a garden perimeter measuring 42 feet. The fence boards are sold in 3-yard panels. How many 3-yard panels must the homeowner purchase?

Solution 2: Convert the garden perimeter from feet to yards, or convert the panel length to feet. Converting panels to feet: each panel is 3 yards = 3 * 3 = 9 feet long. Divide the total perimeter by the length of one panel: 42 / 9 = 4 with a remainder of 6 feet (4 6/9 panels = 4 2/3 panels). Since partial panels cannot be purchased and the entire perimeter must be fenced, round up to the next whole panel: 5 panels must be purchased.
